Auditions For ‘Comedy Of Errors’

With Town Players

Town Players announces auditions for its July production, The Comedy Of Errors, to be directed by Ruth Anne Baumgartner. This early (perhaps earliest) Shakespeare comedy features not one but two sets of twins in a farce-like play based on a classical Roman plot. Added song and dance will enrich the play’s puns, slapstick, and sight gags.

The production will be roughly period. Eighteen performers of various ages are needed, including at least five women. There are six major characters, three characters whose extensive lines are concentrated in only a few scenes, four others whose lesser roles extend through numerous scenes, and various small roles.

Some gender-blind casting is anticipated; some actors may be cast in multiple roles. All roles are open. People who can sing madrigals or play lute or recorder are welcome to audition.

Actors should arrive at the theater ready to read scenes from the script (no accents, please); those who feel cold readings do not represent them accurately may also offer a brief prepared Shakespearean comic monologue.

Anyone interested in crew or tech work is also invited to attend the audition and speak with the director.

Children are not included in this audition. If the director decides to add non-speaking children’s roles, they will be filled by children of adult cast members only.

Participation in this community theatre production is without pay.

Auditions will be held Monday and Tuesday, May 7 and 8, from 7 to 9:30 pm, at The Little Theatre, Orchard Hill Road (off Route 25, just north of Sand Hill Plaza) in Newtown.

Performance dates are Friday and Saturday evenings July 6-28, plus a matinee on Sunday, July 22.
