Gun Shots On Poverty Hollow

By Andrew Gorosko

Soon after he had stopped a motor vehicle on Poverty Hollow Road about 8:45 am Thursday, police Patrol Officer Michael McGowan heard what sounded like gunfire nearby.

The officer again heard what sounded like gunfire, so he alerted the police dispatcher of the situation via police radio, and the dispatcher sent three other officers to the scene, said Police Chief Michael Kehoe.

A male who had just had a domestic dispute had entered a motor vehicle in a driveway next to the residence where the dispute had occurred. The male then fired at least two shots straight up into the air from the vehicle, Chief Kehoe said. There were no injuries.

When confronted by police, the male surrendered without incident, Chief Kehoe said. The male who shot the handgun apparently was relieving tension by firing the weapon following the domestic dispute, the chief said.

Bullets which are fired straight up eventually return to the ground and can injure people, the chief noted.

Police remained at the scene of the incident to investigate the case.

It was purely coincidental and also fortunate that Officer McGowan was in the area when the shots were fired, Chief Kehoe said.

Police were still sorting out the details of the incident Thursday morning. Neither the identities of the people involved in the incident, nor the charges, were available late Thursday morning.
