Timothy Powell Memorial
The 7th annual American Legion Post 202 Timothy Powell Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Monday, August 20, at Rock Ridge Country Club. It will be an 18-hole shotgun start (9 am), rain or shine, with a scramble format. Registration is $85 per golfer and includes golf with cart, steak barbecue at VFW Hall, refreshments, trophies and cash prizes. Registration is on first-come, first-served basis. Travel Basketball Coaches
Coaches for all age levels, 5th through 8th grade (girls and boys), are needed for the Newtown Parks and Recreation travel basketball program. Anyone interested should call John Giorno at 270-9579. Also, a tournament for travel basketball players is being organized and anyone interested in helping should call Mr Giorno or Jack Shpunt at 426-1935.
Trinity 5K Road Race
The Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Danbury will hold its fifth annual Trinity 5K Road Race on Saturday, August 25, to benefit the Children of Chernobyl Relief Fund. The race will start at 9 am at the Midtown Campus of Western Connecticut State University on Eighth Avenue. A Kids Fun Run will begin at 8:30 am and a Health Walk will start at 8:45 am. Fall Baseball
The Newtown Babe Ruth Baseball midget division still has openings for its Fall Ball program. Any player born between August 1, 1994, and October 1, 1995, is eligible. Call Bill Kneisel at 270-8060 for further information. League play begins September 8.

Pomperaug Golf Classic
The second annual Pomperaug Community Golf Tournament will be held Monday, October 22, at Heritage Village in Southbury, to benefit the Christian youth groups in the area. Last year, more than $5,000 was raised to provide funds to the Pomperaug Community Youth Fund, which supported such projects as a Good Friday overnight, an alcohol-free high school graduation night, and sending a teenager going to the Dominican Republic to help out communities there. Fall Basketball Leagues
Triple Double Enterprises, Inc., has announced the formation of fall basketball leagues for players who would fit into the 30-and-over and 40-and-over divisions. The 30-and-over league will play on Monday nights while the 40-and-over league will play on Wednesday nights, both at the Police Activities League (PAL)_facility in Danbury. Connecticut Charmers
The Connecticut Charmers will be holding tryouts for their 2001-2002 fastpitch softball teams August 25th and August 26th at AmityHigh School. The Charmers are an organization made up of girls from across the state dedicated to competitive travel fastpitch softball. The tryouts are as follows: 10U and 12U at 9 am to 12 noon; 14U, 16U and 18U 12 noon to 3 pm. Everyone must pre-register. The Bridgeport Sound Tigers, the new American Hockey_League team, will open its first season on Friday, October 5, in Rochester. The Sound Tigers, one of 27 AHL_teams which will be competing for the Calder Cup, will open their home season at the Arena at Harbor Yard on Wednesday, October 10, against the Philadelphia Phantoms.
