Football Game Showed Patriotism

To the Editor:

I have to respond to Barbara Krausz’ letter stating that she “was deeply disappoint…” and “ashamed of Newtown” because of Newtown High School’s decision to play to football game on Friday, September 14.

I was not part of the decision-making process, but I have a child who was affected, a varsity cheerleader. I have to completely disagree that this game took priority over a nation’s day of mourning. Give these high school students a little credit. They (and, I’m sure, their families) were, and still are, deeply affected by this most horrific tragedy. They have cried, written their thoughts down on paper, raised money and donated items during this crisis. These football players (wearing black leg bands in honor of all victims), cheerleaders and Markettes (holding a large flag and candles) and fans showed their support and patriotism during a very moving pregame ceremony. Ms Krausz, were you even there?

As of that Friday, the only television viewing was the tragedy. Yes, it can become overwhelming for all adults, high schoolers, and younger children as well. President Bush stated that we must all try to return to some state of normalcy, as hard as that may be. So, for 2 1/2 hours that is exactly what happened at that very crowded stadium. We, in tiny little Newtown, showed the terrorists that they will not take away our freedom or make us run scared.

I also have a college cheerleader in Pennsylvania. During many phone calls that week, she assured me her game was being played. At the beginning of the game, an older gentleman was introduced as being a veteran and the grandfather of a football player on the field. This man’s son and the football player’s uncle is a missing firefighter at the World Trade Center. The announcer stated that this man knew his son would want this game to go on and that we must not cave in. He received a five minute standing ovation and a young man then sang God Bless America. There was not a dry eye in the stadium, and I have never been prouder to be an American in the midst of so many feeling the same way.

I would also like to comment on the article concerning the three families who have had their flags stolen. These are despicable acts by cowards and are not condoned in any way, shape, or form. However, I take offense that three individuals suddenly make it Not Nicer in Newtown. Simply look at all the many articles in the paper about the positive actions taken by Newtowners. Is Newtown changing? Yes but many feel it is still Nicer in Newtown.

Continue to pray for all victims, their families, policemen, firefighters, and medical personnel. God Bless America.
