Hikers Announce 2007 Winter Schedule
Newtown Hikers have unveiled their schedule to hikes and special day trips for the January-March 2007 season.
All hikes, unless stated otherwise, start from the lower rear parking lot at Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street in Newtown. Hikers should be at the town hall no later than 10 am, or call each weekâs hike leader to make other arrangements.
The schedule is as follows:
January 6, High Rock, Naugatuck Forest (leader Tim Hanbury, 203-888-3025);
January 13, Reservoir #6, Hartford (leader Ildiko Gramling, 263-0086);
January 20, Seaside Park, Bridgeport (leader Evelyn Schonberg, 426-0425);
January 27, Flanders Nature Center, Woodbury (leader Ildiko Gramling, 263-0086);
February 3, Oxford Bridle Path, Oxford, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and hiking, weather permitting (leader Nancy Zigler, 203-732-2618);
February 10, Rockefeller Preserve, N.Y. (leader Len Patti, 426-3632);
February 17, Sunny Valley, Bridgewater (leader Mary Jo Zemitis, 263-3683);
February 24, New York City trip by train and visit to Museum of Natural History, also Central Park, leave at 9:30 am , carpool to train station, dinner out in city (leader Molly Schleis, 914-766-4546);
March 3, River Road, Roxbury (leader Pat Callan, 264-2153);
March 10, Bear Mt Reservoir, Danbury (leader Molly Schleis, 914-766-4546);
March 17, White Memorial, Litchfield (leader Jim Steck, 845-621-5559);
March 24, Appalachian Trail along Housatonic River in Kent (leader Rita Qubick, 268-4119);
March 31, short local hike followed by potluck lunch for spring schedule planning (contact Evelyn Schonberg for further information & food coordination, 426-0425).
Newtown Hikers is an open group that welcomes anyone interested in hiking and the outdoors. There is no membership fee.
Hikers participate at their own risk and must sign a release for the Newtown Parks & Recreation Dept.
All hikes are moderate and last three to five hours plus driving time unless otherwise stated. Children are welcome accompanied by adults. Bring lunch and beverages. Sturdy shoes or boots are recommended. Dress for the weather, and call each weekendâs hike leader if weather is doubtful.
