DPH To Hold Caregivers Conference

Cromwell — The Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH), in conjunction with other state agencies and partners, is holding the Connecticut Caregivers Conference on Wednesday, May 19, at the Cromwell Radisson Hotel.

The conference will bring together consumer and professional caregivers to connect caregivers with resources and information, and engage in dialogue that will lead to better outcomes for Connecticut caregivers and those they care for.

Nearly one out of every four US households is involved in caregiving to persons aged 50 and over. In 85 percent of caregiving cases, family members and friends provide all care without any outside support with 41 percent of caregivers having children to care for as well. As part of the “sandwich generation,” providing care to more than one generation, many caregivers will spend more years caring for a parent than they do raising a child.

The Connecticut Caregivers Conference will address such issues as the family dynamics of caregiving, financial and legal issues, caregiver choices and options, community resources and the spiritual, physical, and mental health of the caregiver.

Beth Witrogen McLeod will serve as morning keynote speaker, and Dr Joyce Saltman, professor of special education at Southern Connecticut State University, will deliver the luncheon address.

Those interested in attending the conference may register by calling the DPH Office of Communications at 860-509-7270.
