A Busy And Productive Commission

To the Editor:

It is now almost three years since I was elected as Police Commissioner, and I’m pleased to report that the commission has been busy and very productive.

The commission consists of three Republicans and two Independents and is a very collegial group which focuses on issues rather than politics. It is very refreshing.

The commission sets goals for itself each year and reports monthly on how we are working toward meeting our goals. Again very refreshing.

This year the commission’s goals, besides ensuring that the Police Department runs effectively and efficiently, are as follows:

1. Analyze, redesign, and implement an improved monthly report by the Police Department to the commission.

2. Analyze and make recommendations on the reporting and leadership role between the Police Department and the animal control officer, who currently reports to the first selectman.

3. Develop a Crosswalk Safety Plan in conjunction with the Traffic Safety Division.

4. Develop a strategy to improve employee relations at the Newtown Department of Police Services.

In years past the Police Commission goals have included developing an exit interview process for officers leaving the department to help reduce turnover, creating a new annual review process for the chief of police to more effectively review performance, creating and implementing a traffic calming program including a specific traffic unit to help reduce speeding and dangerous driving practices, and conducting a detailed space evaluation and needs assessment of the current police facility.

This has been important work for the community and it demonstrates how an elected board can work together to identify and solve critical issues. We are open to new ideas, willing to change practices, and open to citizens’ input. I want to thank the other commissioners, and especially Duane Giannini, our chairperson whom we elected unanimously, for their spirit of cooperation and willingness to put politics aside and focus on the needs of our community. It has allowed us to make significant strides toward making things “Nicer in Newtown.”

I would also be remiss if I didn’t single out the members of the Police Department for their hard work and personal sacrifices in delivering an unparalleled level of service to the community. Job well done!
