Killer Bees Pile Up Runs

The Newtown Killer Bees softball team defeated Southbury 33-18 on October 10. From the first inning, the Bees looked strong. Sammie Strocchia led off with a base hit, and Tegan Doherty and Isabella Luciano followed with doubles. Strocchia pitched well the first two innings, giving up only one run, aided defensively by Gillian Ostrofsky’s good glove at third base, Emily Bell’s assists at both short stop and second, and Sarah Mawdsley’s exciting play at the plate.

Solid hitting efforts continued for the Bees with singles from Emily Bell, Gillian Ostrofsky, Alexa Horkachuck, Annie Hoffman, and Natalie Shaker which contributed to the Bees’ 11-6 lead at the end of the third.

In the fourth inning, Bee pitcher Tegan Doherty gave up two runs before stopping Southbury. A hard line drive knocked her to the mound, but she recovered quickly throwing the ball to Luciano at first for the out. Doherty, with battery-mate Natalie Shaker, then struck out the next two hitters to end the inning.

In the final inning, the Bees were virtually unstoppable and scored a staggering 17 runs. Southbury’s impressive rally resulted in 10 runs, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap.
