DANBURY â Save the money you would have spent on flowers and candy and take your valentine to see the elephants and clowns instead. The circus is coming.
The Sterling & Reid Bros. Circus will be at WCSUâs OâNeill Center for two shows on Monday, February 14. Circus fans of all ages are invited to visit the universityâs westside campus for an untraditional approach to Valentineâs Day. Performances are planned for 4:30 and 7:30 pm.
Sterling & Reid Bros. is an old-fashioned three-ring circus complete with 20 white horses that dance, prance and waltz; Motorcycle Mania, with riders performing on the high wire; performing elephants including OKA, a 10,000-pound Asian elephant who rolls on a ball, getting all four feet off the ground; and clowns, clowns, clowns including Koko Kramer, an Argentinian who was voted Worldâs Funniest Clown.
Acrobats will be performing on a high wire 400 feet in the air, there will be bears riding horses and doing acrobats, a trampoline act, and one of the companyâs highlights is the Buffalo Ranch Wild West Show. The circus also features an act called The Russian Swing.
âThatâs one of the really cool acts in the show,â Homer the Happy Tramp said this week. Homer was in Newtown to let circus fans know his cohorts would be arriving in Danbury next Monday. âThey fly out and do all these acrobatic tricks, and then they get caught in this swing. It really stands out in the show.â
Before the show and during intermission, the audience is invited to continue the circus tradition of visiting the midway. There, visitors can ride an elephant, a camel and a pony. There will be a Titanic Slide set up, a haunted house, and other rides. Traditional circus cuisine will also be available.
Tickets for Sterling & Reid Bros. Circus at the OâNeill Center are $12.95 for adults and will be on sale at the circus tent the afternoon and evening of the shows. For children age 12 and under, admission is $5.75 per child, or free with a coupon that can be picked up from a number of local merchants.
The OâNeill Center is on the westside campus of Western CT State University, off Mill Plain Road in Danbury.
