Winter Workshops At IAIS

WASHINGTON — The Institute for American Indian Studies has announced its late February and March 2001 schedule of programs. Prior registration is necessary for the following events.

Special adult classes to be held will include a workshop presented by Dr Rolf Martin and Barrie Sachs of Happy Rainbow Herbals of Sherman. “Herbs for Winter Health: Practical and Scientific Aspects of Healing Winter Herbs Used by Native Americans” will be presented Sunday, February 25.

March adult workshops will include a special workshop by Robert Moss, a dream explorer, spiritual counselor, novelist, and historian. Participants of the two-day program will learn the arts of active dreaming, shamanic journeying, and compassionate communication with the departed. This workshop will be presented on March 3 and 4 and space is very limited.

On March 10 an adult drum workshop presented by E. Barrie Kavasch will take place as well as a beading workshop by Janice Us. The follow day, an ethnobotony-healing workshop, “EarthWise Knowledge of the Winter Woods,” will be presented. This workshop was originally planned for January 28.

On march 17, the museum will host its annual maple sugar festival. Pancakes and syrup samples will be served from noon to 2 pm, and a Native American syrup-making techniques demonstration by Jim Dina, primitive technologist, will be presented in the IAIS Village.

Children’s programs include a workshop presented for ages 4-6, during which they will learn a Native American social dance, song, and to make a pine-tip doll from 2 to 3 pm on March 10. On March 17, during the Annual Maple Sugar Festival, IAIS education staff will share maple sugar stories and a maple project will be completed between 2 and 3 pm.

For a full classes/workshops schedule or reservations, call IAIS at 860/868-0518, ext 3. Advance registration is required, and fees may be applicable.
