Young trap shooters from Connecticut will be competing for their share of the $69,000 in college scholarships as the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) kicks off its third season.
The SCTP State Trap Championships will be held June 21 at the Hartford Gun Club in East Granby. Last year, the Boy Scout Troop 39 team from Marlborough represented the Nutmeg State at the National Championships.
SCTP is the national youth shooting program developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) â based on Mile Hill Road in Newtown â to offer young men and women the opportunity to compete as a team for state and national titles in the clay target disciplines of trap, skeet, and sporting clays.
Participants will also vie for the opportunity to train with Americaâs Olympic shotgun coaches as part of the Junior Olympic Development Camp hosted by USA Shooting at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
The 2003 SCTP season will see some changes. Due to overwhelming interest from coaches, parents and young shooters, there will be a new Rookie Division for youth in grades five and below. Also, the total amount of scholarships has been raised to $69,000 with $1,000 going to each competitor on the top teams in the Junior and Senior divisions in each of the three disciplines.
The National Trap Championships are slated for August 8 and 9 in Vandalia, Ohio while the Skeet and Sporting Clay Nationals will be held September 11-14 in San Antonio, Texas.
