Ag Station To Hold April 19 Plant Science In Spring Program

NEW HAVEN, CONN. — The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station will hold a free “Plant Science in the Spring” program at 1 pm on Monday, April 19, in the Donald F. Jones Auditorium, 123 Huntington Street.

Visitors will hear talks, visit laboratories and greenhouses, and have an opportunity to bring soil samples for testing and plant, insect, and weed problems to be identified.

The speakers for the event will be Dr Sharon Douglas on “First Steps for a Healthy Garden,” Dr Abigail Maynard on “New Vegetable Crops,” and Dr Martin Gent on “Tomatoes for the Garden and Greenhouse.”

Gale Ridge will answer questions about insects, Dr Sharon Douglas and Mary Inman will answer questions about plant problems and diseases, Dr Todd Mervosh will answer questions about weeds, and John Winiarski will answer questions about soils.

Demonstrations in the laboratories include Dr David Stilwell on arsenic in pressure-treated lumber; Dr Walter Krol and Dr Brian Eitzer on pesticides in food and the environment; Dr Neil McHale on genetic engineering in plants; Dr Louis Magnarelli on detecting antibodies to agents of Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, and babesiosis; Dr Kirby Stafford on Lyme disease and tick control; Bonnie Hamid on looking in on the station’s biosafety Level 3 laboratory; Michael Thomas and John Shepard on the mosquito testing laboratory; Gale Ridge in the insect information office; Mary Inman on the plant diagnostic laboratory; and John Winiarski in the soil testing laboratory.

Other demonstrations in the greenhouses will be: Dr Abigail Maynard and Dr David Hill on growing transplants for the home and garden; Dr Jeffrey Ward, J.P. Barsky, and Scott Williams on seed dispersal by white-tailed deer in southcentral Connecticut; Dr Sandra Anagnostakis on chestnut trees bred for resistance to chestnut blight; Dr Wade Elmer and Dr Francis Ferrandino on diseases of flowers and vegetables; and Dr Donald Aylor on aerial dispersal of corn pollen.
