Golden Angels Jazz Band To Open

New Series At Ridgefield Playhouse

RIDGEFIELD — The Golden Angles Jazz Band can play it all — classic Dixieland, standard swing and blues — and they will as part of the McPhaden Properties Silver Series at The Ridgefield Playhouse for Movies and the Performing Arts on Monday, January 23, at 1 pm.

Originally scheduled to perform in November, The Golden Angels Jazz Band was moved to this new January date… and what a way to ring in the New Year.

The McPhaden Properties Silver Series is new to The Playhouse, and was developed in order to specifically offer seniors (as well as others) affordable concerts. The Golden Eagles concert is happening on a Monday afternoon and is being coordinated with many of the senior facilities in town and the outlying area.

Other performing coming up in the series are Fontenay Chamber Players on April 9 and New York Sounds, Voices Community (a group who sing everything from cabaret to Broadway) on April 23.

Rhythm comes naturally to the Golden Angels — all of whom are seniors, except vocalist Barbara Carberry — as they have spent their lives as professional and teaching musicians. Members have played in symphony orchestras, chamber music groups, big dance bands and small jazz combos, but now they play for the shear joy of playing music that’s pleasant to the ear.

Members are Jack Adams, Frank Bleuel, Bob Bull, Gene Clayton, Dennis Hyde, John Kirkpatrick, Jim O’Connor and Bill Steinhauser, along with Ms Carberry.

The band even plays an occasional ragtime song, adding to the toe-tapping, body-swaying reaction in the audience. They might start with “Fidgety Feet,” go on to “Mood Indigo” and finish with “Struttin’ With Some Barbecue.” In between, there is a bit of history as they relate the background of the music we love so well.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and $7.50 for students.

Further information and reservations are available by calling 203-438-5795.
