Occupation:  I am a retired physician. I practiced as an ear, nose and throat specialist in Ithaca, N.Y. When I retired, I earned an MBA and have developed software for computerized medical records. I earned my BA at Hamilton College and my degree in medicine from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. I completed my medical training in New York and Boston.

How Long in Newtown: I have lived in Newtown for six years. Prior to this, I lived in Ithaca, where I practiced and we raised our children. We moved here following my wife’s completion of her PHD at Cornell.

Biggest Change Seen in Town: We are aware of the great increase in residential housing and some loss of the beautiful countryside. Without more care and planning, I fear more of this natural beauty may vanish. We really do love it here. I am not anti-growth, but it has to be carefully managed.

Family: My wife Chris and I have been married for 35 years. She is the school-to-career coordinator for southern Fairfield County for Cooperative Educational Services in Trumbull. We have four children. Reynolds, 33, and his wife, Jennifer, have three children and live in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He works for Sandia National Labs. Kempley, 31, and her husband, Chuck Bryant, have two children. She teaches French. Lindsey, 29, and her husband, Sam Tucker, live in Seattle. She’s in her last year of an MSW degree. Kirby, 25, is single and is a custom research manager in Washington, DC.

Pets: We have one cat named Popageno.

Hobbies: We have a house in Vermont where we enjoy skiing and water activities. I go to the health club several times a week. I also study piano. Chris and I sing with the Connecticut Choral Society and with the church choir at Trinity. We also sing with the Berkshire Choral Festival.

Favorite Books and Authors: I read a lot of biographies and a variety of things. I also like fiction by Patrick O’Brien and Tom Clancey.

Favorite TV Show: Masterpiece Theater.

Organizations: I am a member of the board of the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate. I am a member of Newtown friends of Music, and attend Trinity Episcopal Church where I am a member of the Leadership Gifts Committee for Restoration. For Habitat, I am in charge of volunteer coordination. Trying to find land to build on is difficult. We have almost completed our second house in Newtown and are awaiting action by the Legislative Council on obtaining one of the Queen Street houses the town owns. We are very hopeful. Newtown can be very proud of the housing that has been built for Habitat. Newtown has done very well, and this is an opportunity to do more. The town can afford it, and it would be good for local image.

Most Vivid Memory of Newtown: We’ve enjoyed the Labor Day Parade and taken our grandchildren to it. We also enjoy going through the open houses at Christmas time.

Favorite Vacation Spot: We enjoy Vermont and Sanibel, Fla., an island on the west coast. We go there every spring. We gather up our children at either of those spots. Everybody will be in Florida this spring.

Personal Philosophy: Enjoy the changing world and grow with these changes. Maintain and expand family ties as well as new and old friends. Help those in greater need.
