Betty B.

McAllister

Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, and Friend

Betty B. McAllister, 84, of Walnut Tree Village in Sandy Hook, died December 28 while receiving hospice care for colon cancer at her son’s home in Glastonbury. She was born July 15, 1923, in Alton, Ill., raised in Toledo, Ohio, and spent the majority of her adult life in Cleveland, where she worked as a teacher, volunteer, and homemaker. In her retirement in Brevard, N.C., and Lexington, Va., she became an accomplished artist.

Mrs McAllister is survived by her son, Marshall S. Berdan and his wife, Stacie, of Glastonbury; stepson, Paul S. McAllister and his wife, Patricia, of Littleton, Colo.; two stepdaughters, Jane Adrianse of Asheville, N.C., and Barbara Landwehr, of Greenville, S.C.; two grandchildren, Betty B. Berdan and Constance C. Berdan of Glastonbury; a brother, Randolph H. Barnard, Jr, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; and 18 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Randolph H. and Jean B. Barnard, two husbands, Marshall S. Berdan of Cleveland, and Sidney B. McAllister of Atlanta, Ga. (who died in Sandy Hook in 2004); an infant son, William B. Berdan; and two brothers, Henry C. Barnard of Lutz, Fla., and Michael A. Barnard of San Jose, Costa Rica.

Though Mrs McAllister only moved to Sandy Hook in 2004 so as to be near her son and his family, this was her third sojourn in Connecticut, having graduated from Miss Porter’s School in Farmington in 1941 and then from Connecticut College in New London in 1945.

As per her wishes, a memorial service will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo, Ohio, later this spring. Internment will follow the graveside service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Connecticut Visiting Nurse Association Home Healthcare and Hospice, 111 Founders Plaza, 2nd Floor, East Hartford CT 06108.
