FARM, COOK SAMPLES CROP UP AT RICH PENN AUCTION MAY 3–4 w/4 cuts

avv/gs set 4/9 #735016

DES MOINES, IOWA — May is a month when farmers take to their fields. In the late 1800s companies like John Deere would send their sales agents out hawking their “planting” goods, armed with a salesman’s sample of what they were selling. A miniature model of a John Deere Gilpin sulky plow, developed in 1875, will be among a host of salesman’s samples offered at Rich Penn’s auction May 3 and 4 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

Other salesman’s samples include a Quick Meal Stove Company Model 407-16, a Coca-Cola 1939 cooler with carrying case and a rare Koken Company circa 1900 barber chair.

The two-day auction event will feature a diverse group of fine collections totaling 1,400 lots, including advertising, country store, toys, cap guns, miniature gas boat motors, mechanical banks, syrup dispensers, straw holders, candy jars, coffee grinders, nautical items, medical items, petroliana and coin-operated machines.

More than 50 mechanical banks, many hard to find examples, will be featured, including Professor Pug Frog, The Dentist, Calamity, Single Peanut Lion & Monkey, Chief Big Moon and The Magician. Pressed steel toys on offer will include nearly two dozen cars and trucks from Buddy L, Steelcraft and Keystone.

Sunday’s session includes a sizable collection of soda fountain pieces, including the largest group of syrup dispensers to be sold at auction since Penn’s sale in 2005. With nearly 100 dispensers to choose from, there will be one for every level of collector and every budget. Among the rare are the Fan-Taz, the Beatsall Root Beer, the large version of the Orange Crush, the rare Lime Crush and the clear globe version of the Hires Muni-Maker.

More Saturday highlights include a rare Peter Beetz Push & Pull strength tester, a Cail-O-Scope viewer machine, a grandfather clock floor model strength tester and a Polyphon disk player.

One of the featured collections is from the Jerry Rudy collection, featuring country store and store stock items featuring spices, soaps, tobaccos, cleansers, dairy items, coffees, teas, chewing gums, soda pop and other beverages and a host of related items. All major iconic brands are included.

From the collection of John Reech of Dallas, chewing gum standouts include one of the finest pieces of Wrigley’s cardboard die cuts ever produced.

Automotive lots include a two-sided Studebaker porcelain sign, a porcelain Caterpillar sign and many porcelain gasoline signs. Automotive toy collectors will find an original 1920s pedal car, and a 1940s working model of an automobile.

Other offerings include a round oak model H-61 cast iron parlor stove, a rare Fada 1000 blue and butterscotch bullet Catalin radio, and an 1890s standup store card for L.I. Lighthall, the “King of Diamonds.”
