Bombers Reach Bronze Medal Game

Newtown Bombers U10 baseball team placed fourth among nine teams in the Nutmeg State Games, falling to the Danbury Blast All-Stars 10-5 in the bronze medal game.

The Bombers had lost 10-8 to the New Milford Express, despite a comeback attempt, in the previous game. Trailing 4-0 in the second inning, Zack Aumueller doubled home Joe Duero and Jared Brady followed with an RBI single to cut the lead to 4-2. Down 8-2, Newtown again fought back. Eric Street drove in Nick Randle, who had singled and stolen second base, for a run in the third. In the fourth, Brady drove in Connor Ryan and in the fifth Newtown scored three more times but couldn’t overcome the team that was regional champions as nine-year-olds the year before. Aumeller was 3-for-3 with three runs batted in.

The Bombers got off to a 3-0 start in the games after a 12-8 win over New Canaan on August 1. Newtown overcame an 8-1 third-inning deficit. The rally began in the third when Street delivered the first Newtown hit of the game. Tim Vander Have walked in the inning and Newtown plated two runs to make the score 8-3. In the fifth, Matt Elias singled and scored on Street’s hit to right field, Vander Have hit a ball off the left field fence to score pinch runner Kyle McGrath and Brady put down a bunt to score Vanderhave, pulling Newtown within 8-6. Newtown scored six times in the top of the sixth. Ethan Carpenter led off the inning with a single, Devin Luzietti hit a double to left field, Street delivered another single, Brady then hit a single to right field to bring in McGrath, the pinch runner. Aumeller singled to right and Alex Daignault hit a home run over the left field wall to finish the scoring. Aumeller closed out the game with a perfect final inning.
