Flagpole Hit

About 4:11 pm on November 14, motorist Joshua Ross, 17, of Southbury, who was driving a 2018 Hyndai Accent auto westward on Church Hill Road, attempted to make a left turn onto southbound Main Street, but in doing so, Ross struck the Main Street flagpole, police said.

There were no injuries. Ross made an improper turn and also violated passenger restrictions in effect on young drivers. The Hyundai carried a 17-year-old passenger.

Two Warrants

Police report that on the morning of November 13, Kenneth Berry, 53, of Newtown, went to the police station after learning of two warrants for his arrest.

Police charged Berry with two counts of second-degree failure to appear in court. After posting $20,000 bail, Berry was released for a November 28 court appearance.

DUI Warrant

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Joseph Gargano, 44, of Newtown went to the police station on the morning of November 13 and was charged with driving under the influence and with following too closely.

The charges stem from a serious motor vehicle accident that occurred on the morning of July 27, near 103 South Main Street, according to police. In that crash, Gargano was driving a commercial van that struck the rear end of a commercial box truck. The crash sent Gargano to the hospital for treatment of injuries and caused travel delays on the roadway.

Following arrest processing, police released Gargano on $1,500 bail for a November 28 court appearance.

Two Icy Crashes

Police report that two separate accidents occurred in rapid sequence about 6:30 am on November 12, when two vehicles traveling northward near 12 Main Street encountered an icy patch of pavement and then skidded off the road.

Motorist Pablo Contreras-Perez, 41, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 2001 Ford Explorer SUV, skidded on the icy patch and went off the left side of the street, striking and knocking down a tree at 17 Main Street, police said. Motorist Jaime Aponte, 62, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 2007 Nissan Frontier pickup truck, skidded on the ice and went off the left side of the road onto a lawn at 17 Main Street. There were no injuries.

Drug Charges

Police said they stopped motorist Peter Kopchik, 37, of Ansonia near the intersection of Berkshire Road and Lone Oak Meadows Road about 10:11 am on November 12 to investigate a possible vehicular violations.

After investigating, police charged Kopchik with possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving with a suspended license.

After processing, police released Kopchik on $500 bail for a November 27 court appearance.

SUV Vs Minivan

A two-vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of Sugar Street and Elm Drive about 4:54 pm on November 12, police said.

A 2018 Dodge Durango SUV driven by Jane Hall-Ramon, 49, of Bethel attempted to make a turn, but accidentally struck a 2003 Honda Odyssey minivan driven by John Crane, 65, of Newtown. There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Hall-Ramon for failure to grant the right of way.

Two SUVs

Police report that motorist Newman Marsilius, 48, of Trumbull was driving a 2018 Porsche Macan GTS SUV eastward on Berkshire Road, near Newtown High School, on November 12, as was motorist Tracy Lebeau, 22, of West Haven, who was driving a 2013 Nissan Rogue SUV.

Both vehicles then stopped, after which the Nissan rolled forward and struck the rear end of the Porsche. There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Lebeau for following too closely.

Sideswipe MVA

About 5 pm on November 9, motorist Kyle Sullivan, 16, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 1995 Jeep Wrangler SUV, sideswiped a 2015 Buick Lacrosse sedan driven by Nicholas Valhos, 73, of Hyde Park, N.Y., at Wasserman Way’s intersection with the Exit 11 ramps for Interstate 84, police said.

There were no injuries. After the collision, Sullivan did not stop at the accident scene. Sullivan was contacted at his home and said that he did not realize that a collision had occurred, police said. Police issued Sullivan an infraction for failure to drive to the right.

GTO

State police said that at about 9:41 pm on November 9, motorist Gray Braun, 24, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2005 Pontiac GTO coupe, lost control of the auto on westbound Interstate 84’s Exit 10 on-ramp and hit some guardcables along the right road shoulder.

There were no injuries. Enforcement information was not available.

Two Warrants

Police report they stopped to investigate a vehicle that was parked at Fairfield Hills late on the night of November 9.

Police said that a records check indicated that a passenger, Marissa Fulk, 19, of Waterford, had two arrest warrants pending against her. Police arrested Fulk on two counts of second-degree failure to appear in court in connection with past incidents that occurred in Waterford and Groton. After processing, police released Fulk on $2,000 bail for a November 21 court appearance in New London.

Rear-End Crash

About 7:55 am on November 8, motorist Eliza Purse, 32, of Stamford, who was driving a 2015 Subaru Impreza auto northward on South Main Street, near its intersection with Glover Avenue, Main Street, and Sugar Street, stopped for traffic conditions, after which the Subaru was struck from behind by northbound motorist Emily Rhew, 35, of Newtown, who was driving a 2017 Nissan Rogue SUV, police report.

There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Rhew for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Van Hits Pickup

A two-vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of Taunton Hill Road, Great Hill Road, and Plumtrees Road about 8:06 am on November 6. Each leg of the four-way intersection is controlled by a stop sign.

Motorist Wagner Alves-Pereira, 33, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, stopped at the intersection, after which the Chevrolet was struck from behind by a 1999 Ford Econoline van driven by Joao Dasilva, 40, of Bridgeport, police said.

There were no injuries. Dasilva received a written warning for traveling an unreasonable distance apart.

South Main Street

Motorist Jeffrey Collier, 62, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 1991 Chevrolet G-20 Sportvan, was waiting a at a stop sign on Ethan Allen Road and preparing to make a left turn onto South Main Street at about 11:08 am on November 3, as motorist Paula DeSouza-Weimer, 26, of Danbury, was driving a 2008 Mercury Mariner SUV northward on South Main Street and approaching the intersection, police said.

The Chevrolet then entered South Main Street, and the two vehicles collided. There were no injuries. Collier was verbally warned for a stop sign violation.

About 8:27 am on November 13, on Dodgingtown Road, near its intersection with Rooster Ridge Road, two vehicles collided during rainy conditions, causing travel delays while wreckage removal was underway. Police said that motorist Keith Erwin, 53, of Bethel, who was driving a 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX St-1 hatchback, stopped for a stopped school bus, after which the Subaru was struck from behind by a 2016 Mercedes-Benz C-300 4-Matic sedan driven by David Cooper, 37, of Danbury. The impact pushed the Subaru off the road and into a tree. There were no injuries. Dodgingtown volunteer firefighters responded to the acccient.
