Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*Jerry King and his wife Peggy accompanied by Arnie Gross will be at the center on Tuesday, September 15, for a one-hour show “GORDON MacRAE REMEMBERED.” Enjoy a wonderful afternoon listening to timeless tunes. Refreshments will be served.

*On Wednesday, September 16, at 1 pm, Kristen Scheibel Bazuro will show several easy, fun, fast ways to organize your boxes of printed photos. Join us for “Share the Memories Behind the Moments.”

*Depart at 8:30 am on Thursday, September 17 to the Primorski Russian Restaurant for family-style lunch and fun shopping on BRIGHTON BEACH Avenue “Little Russia” and Coney Island Boardwalk. Cost is $74.

*AARP DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM will be Thursday and Friday, September 17 and 18, from 12:30 to 4:30 pm. This is a refresher course and you must attend both days. Cost is $12 for AARP members; nonmembers, $14.

*The ECUMENICAL BIBLE STUDY classes studying Matthew will be on Fridays. All are welcome.

 

Upcoming Programs

*COMMISSION ON AGING will be Monday, September 21, at 5 pm.

*The “Art” of Weather. ART HORN will be at the center September 23 at 1 pm with an entertaining weather program “The Mysteries of Weather.” This will be fun-filled info/educational presentation with a slideshow, followed by refreshments.

*An APPLE BAKING CONTEST will be conducted on Wednesday, September 30, at 1 pm with BINGO to follow.

*ANNUAL FLU SHOTS will be every Tuesday in October from 9 am until noon. No appointment is necessary.

 

Day Trips

*Enjoy a fall excursion on Tuesday, September 22, on a 17-mile train ride through the Naugatuck Valley of Connecticut. Lunch at San Marino and then complete your trip with a tour and wine tasting at Haight Vineyard. Cost is $68.

*Depart at 7 am on Wednesday, October 7, and board the M.V. Commander at West Haverstraw, N.Y., for a 2-hour Hudson River Cruise to West Point. Enjoy lunch at Gashbo of Japan with hibachi-style cooking right at your table. After lunch, tour and taste at Brotherhood Winery, America’s oldest winery. Cost is $76.

*Enjoy an OCTOBERFEST celebration at Platzl Brauhaus, Pomona, N.Y., on Tuesday, October 20, with a family-style dinner, beer, soda or apple cider and dancing and singing along with the German band and dancers. Depart 8:30 am; cost is $80.

Overnight Trips

*UPCOMING TRIPS: Las Vegas on October 26–30 at Flamingo Hilton or Harrah’s, cost is $729, $100 deposit due upon signup; and an Atlantic Canada Cruise, September 7–12, Nova Scotia Cruise on The Carnival Triumph. More information can be obtained at the center.

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*Billiards room; poker/card room; ping pong; and Wii bowling, golf, tennis, and baseball.

*Wii BOWLING, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

*SCRAPBOOKING every Tuesday at 10 am.

*MAKE CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am with Mary Matern.

*Iris card folding CRAFT CLASS every Thursday at 2 pm.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE DAY on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend.

Monday: AM cards, hatha yoga, exercise, PM chorus group, weaving, exercise.

Tuesday: AM cards for troops, line dancing; PM Tai Chi, movie.

Wednesday: AM bridge, exercise; PM exercise.

Thursday: AM hatha yoga, cards; PM iris card folding craft class, mah jongg, Scrabble, Wii bowling.

Friday: AM mah jongg, Quilts of Valor, PM Exercise class, Ecumenical Bible study group, knitting, movie.

 

Menu For Week Of September 14–18

Monday: Beef stroganoff served over egg noodles, diced winter squash, pumpernickel bread, pound cake.

Tuesday: Caribbean chicken, rice and beans, spinach, buttermilk biscuit, mixed fruit juice, pineapple tidbits.

Wednesday: Dave’s meatloaf with gravy, mashed potato, country style vegetables, dinner roll, fruit cocktail.

Thursday: Lentil soup with crackers, fish with Creole sauce, roasted potatoes, garden peas, seedless rye bread, seasonal fresh fruit.

And for planning ahead —

Monday: September 21: Oven fried chicken quarter, macaroni and cheese, winter blend vegetables, corn bread, season fresh fruit.

Tuesday: September 22: Roast pork with gravy, mashed potato, green beans, applesauce garnish, wheat bread, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.
