Beautifying The Green At Fairfield Hills
Beautifying The Green At Fairfield Hills
Changes are reshaping rutted gravel between Woodbury and Newtown Halls. Heavy machinery has scarred the strip of ground between the two former state hospital buildings and the beginnings of a more scenic central green are emerging.
Rob Manna with LRM Landscape Contractors unfolded a diagram: on paper was a central, 40-foot flagpole surrounded by a circle of paving stones and two benches, and on either end of the green were brief patio areas that also included several benches. Shrubbery and landscaping also were detailed.
The space will offer a rustic view and place to rest. Standing near the flagpoleâs intended location Wednesday were Parks and Recreation Director Amy Mangold and Fairfield Hills Authority Chairman Bob Geckle. At the head of the green beyond Newtown and Woodbury is Shelton House, the original building set aside for the new municipal offices until excess water in the basement convinced planners to refocus renovation plans to Bridgeport Hall.
With a âlittle landscaping,â what is now gravel and excavated soil will become an inviting setting. With thanks to the Rotary Club of Newtown for a $25,000 contribution, Mr Geckle noted the funds will add to a $300,000 streetscape grant that will pay for a broader scale of site work to include parking areas and lighting. Old flagpoles that had been set in concrete foundations could not be reused. With the help of town crews and contractors, work was underway Wednesday, June 24.
