Wilfred Gamble

Wilfred Gamble, 89, of Tenants Harbor, Maine, former principal of a Southbury

elementary and two Danbury elementary schools, died February 22 at his home.

Mr Gamble was the husband of Irene Gamble of Tenants Harbor.

He was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, April 26, 1908. He came to the

United States in 1929, attended high school in Binghamton, N.Y., and earned a

masters degree in education from Columbia University in 1938.

He served as principal of a private school for black children in Marion, Ala.,

until he was drafted into the US Navy in 1943. Upon his discharge in 1945, he

went to Southbury and became principal of its elementary school and then two

Danbury elementary schools in 1950. He also taught children's literature at

Danbury State College.

He was active in local government, moderating many town meetings, and serving

the Town of Southbury in many capacities, including as selectman.

Mr Gamble and his wife summered in Maine, and moved to Tenants Harbor

permanently in 1980. He was an active member of the Rockland Rotary and a

member of the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Rockland.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Patricia Kahn of Union, Maine;

two grandchildren; a great-grandson; and many cousins in both America and

Ireland.

Lucille Gennamore

Lucille Clara Petricca Gennamore, 70, of Sandy Hook, died February 23 in her

home.

Born in Redding, Penn., she was a former resident of Monroe and Bridgeport

before moving to Sandy Hook.

Mrs Gennamore was predeceased by her husband, Rosario Gennamore.

Survivors include her daughters, Donna Marie Rondyke, Lucille Gennamore,

Christine Tufano; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and several

nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 27, at noon in St Jude's

Church, Monroe, with a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be in Stepney

Village Cemetery.

Friends may call Friday from 10:30-11:30 am in the Redgate, Wilmot, West, and

Goulding Funeral Home, 406 Main Street, Monroe.

Salvatore C. Rotante

Salvatore C. Rotante, 82, father of Joanne Logan of Newtown, died January 19

in Massapequa, N.Y. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jean Rotante of

Massapequa.

Mr Rotante was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He lived in Italy until he was

nine years old when he came to this country with his family.

During World War II, Mr Rotante worked for the Department of Defense making

torpedoes. Following that, he was employed with the ILGWU and worked in

Manhattan as the union's business agent. He transferred to Long Island just

prior to retiring in 1982.

Mr Rotante was an amateur artist who enjoyed drawing, sculpting and singing.

He was active in many civic and local affairs including the Knights of

Columbus in Seaford and the Sons of Italy in Farmingdale. He was a member of

several senior citizen clubs and liked to help entertain the residents of

local nursing homes.

In addition to his wife and his daughter, Joanne Logan and her husband John of

Newtown, Mr Rotante is survived by his other children: John Rotante of

Wyckoff, N.J., and Salvatore Rotante Jr and his wife Lisa of Gainesville, Va.;

11 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and by two brothers.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. William the Abbott R.C. Church Seaford.

Burial was in St Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale.

Dorothy M. Stratton

Dorothy Marjorie Stratton, 97, died February 23 at Mediplex of Southbury.

Mrs Stratton formerly lived at 184B Heritage Village for 13 years. She moved

to Southbury 13 years ago. She was the wife of the late John F.O. Stratton.

She was born in Chicago, Ill., on April 29, 1900, a daughter of Caryl Leslie

and Ella May Faupel Young.

While living in New York City, Mrs Stratton was employed for more than 30

years as the chief buyer in charge of stationery for many companies on Fifth

Avenue, including Tiffany & Co. She had many prestigious clients, including

John F. and Jacquelyn B. Kennedy, whom she assisted for many years with their

personal as well as Presidential stationary.

Mrs Stratton is survived by a son, former Newtown resident John C. Stratton,

of Naples, Fla.; a granddaughter, Caryl S. Stratton, formerly of Newtown; four

great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Wellers Cemetery, Roxbury.

The Southbury Funeral Home of Munson-Lovetere, 235 Main St, North, Southbury

was in charge of arrangements.

George Kuhne

George Kuhne, 88, of Johnson Drive, Sandy Hook, died February 24 in Mediplex

of Danbury. He was the husband of Margaret Casey Kuhne.

He was born in Southbury, May 30, 1909, a son of George and Ottilia

(Oberstadt) Kuhne. He had been a resident of Sandy Hook the past 50 years.

He was employed for many years at the First National Grocery Store in Sandy

Hook until it closed in the 1960s.

Besides his wife, he is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 27, at 11 am in the Honan

Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, with the Rev Steven Gordon officiating. Burial

will be in St. Rose Cemetery. Friends may call after 10 am Friday.

Carol J. Charron

Carol J. Charron, 80, a retired psychiatric aide at Fairfield Hills Hospital,

died Saturday at her home at Nunnawauk Meadows in Newtown.

Mrs Charron was the wife of the late Irmand Charron.

She was born in Benson, Vt., on February 9, 1918, a daughter of Horace and

Jennie Wilcox King.

Before moving to Newtown in 1958, Mrs Charron and her husband operated a dairy

farm in West Haven, Vt.

She was a member of St Rose Church.

Her survivors include a son, Phillip Charron of Castleton, Vt.; two daughters,

Phyllis Gillotti of Benson, Vt., and Denise Pinter of Bridgewater, Conn.; nine

grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son,

Joseph Charron.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, February 27, at Durfee Funeral Home,

Fair Haven, Vt.

The service will be on Saturday, February 28, at 11 am, at Our Lady of Seven

Dolors Catholic Church, Fair Haven, Vt. Burial will be in St Mary's Cemetery,

Fair Haven.

A memorial service will be held at St Rose Church in Newtown at a date to be

announced.

Bennett H. Short, Sr

Bennett H. Short, Sr, the father of David Short of Newtown, died Monday in

Rockledge, Fla. He was the husband of Louise Hoyt Short.

Mr Short was born in Bethel in 1911. He was a graduate of Phillips Exeter

Academy and attended Yale University. He was a retired employee of the Risdon

Manufacturing Company of Danbury.

He had been a resident of Cocoa Beach, Fla., since 1991.

A lifetime member of St Thomas Episcopal Church, he was an acolyte, choir

member and parish clerk.

Mr Short also is survived by another son, Bennett H. Short Jr of Hollis, N.H.,

a daughter, Margaret Howe of Rockledge, Fla.; six grandchildren, and a

great-granddaughter.

Carl Iwertz, Jr

Carl Evert Iwertz, Jr, 67, of Sandy Hook, died February 22 in St Vincent's

Medical Center, Bridgeport.

He was the husband of the late Bessie Covert Iwertz.

Born in New Rochelle, N.Y., he was the son of Ina Dietrickson Iwertz of

Newtown and the late Carl E. Iwertz, Sr.

Mr Iwertz moved to Sandy Hook from Monroe four years ago. For 20 years he was

a self-employed contractor and the former owner of Skane Sales & Service Inc.

He was a graduate of Utah State University and a High Priest in the Church of

Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. He was a member of the Troop Committee

and former Scoutmaster of Troop 268.

Mr Iwertz also was a member of the Northstar Singers and the Scandinavian Club

in Fairfield.

He was a US Army veteran of the Korean Conflict during which he served as a

first lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers.

In addition to his mother, Mr Iwertz is survived by two sons, Charles E.

Iwertz of Henderson, Nev., and Carl E. Iwertz, III of Monroe; a daughter,

Carolyn Elizabeth Iwertz of Henderson, Nev.; a sister, Ann LaRosa of Canaan;

five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The service was held at 10 am on Thursday, February 26, in the Church of Jesus

Christ of the Latter Day Saints, 30 Bonnie View Drive, Trumbull, with Bishop

Kevin Kaufman officiating. Interment will be in Maple Grove Memorial Park,

Easton. The Harding Funeral Home, 210 Post Road East, Westport, was in charge

of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

Eva A. Morrison

Former Newtown resident Eva A. Morrison, 81, of Unionville, died Sunday,

February 22, at the Farmington Convalescent Home in Farmington.

She was born in Bridgeport, March 17, 1916, a daughter of the late George and

Eva Hoepfner Brust.

Prior to her retirement, she was associated with Newtown Savings Bank in

Southbury, the Holcomb Fuel Company in Newtown and, most recently, Dresser

Industries in Newtown.

She is survived by her daughter, Virginia Morrison of Unionville; a son,

Harold F. Morrison; two sisters, Irene Bush and Pearl Norton, both of Florida;

a brother, George Brust of Trumbull; and three grandchildren. She was

predeceased by her sister, Mae Domizzio, and her brother, Robert Brust.

Graveside funeral services were held on February 25 at Park Cemetery,

Bridgeport, with the Rev Caroline Meyer conducting the Committal Prayers.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Children's Cancer Fund, UConn Health

Center, Farmington, CT 06034.

The Ahern Funeral Home, 111 Main Street, Unionville, handled the arrangements.

Viktor Korol

Viktor Korol, 74, the father of Peter Korol of Newtown, died February 20 in

Bridgeport Hospital. He was the husband of Fannie Luongo Korol of Bridgeport.

Mr Korol was born in the Ukraine and was a Bridgeport area resident for more

than 40 years. He was a retired machine operator with Peerless Die Casting and

Permanent Mold Co.

He also is survived by another son, Michael Korol of Terryville; two

daughters, Kathleen Greco of Stratford and Karin Hudak of Monroe; six

grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on February 24 at St Ambrose Church

in Bridgeport. Interment was in St Michaels Cemetery.

The funeral arrangements were handled by the Cyril F. Mullins Funeral Home,

1640 Boston Avenue, Bridgeport.

Carmella D. Lanza

Carmella DeSantis Lanza, 78, the mother of Carmella Amodeo of Newtown, died

February 20 at Danbury Hospital.

A Danbury resident, Mrs Lanza was the wife of the late Albert J. Lanza.

She was born in Italy, August 10, 1919, a daughter of Carlo and Theresa

Mucitelli DeSantis. She immigrated to Danbury at age 2.

Mrs Lanza first worked at the former Danbury Novelty. She later worked for the

Danbury Board of Education as a kitchen aide at Rogers Park Junior High School

for 31 years.

She also is survived by a son, Albert Lanza of Bethel; another daughter,

Theresa Carreiro of New Fairfield; a sister, Susie Krisko of Danbury; two

brothers, Mariano DeSantis of Bethel and Toni DeSantis of Brookfield; five

grandchildren; and seven nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on February 23 at St Peter Church in

Danbury. Burial followed in St Peter Cemetery.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Salvation Army, 15 Foster

Street, Danbury, CT 06810.

The funeral arrangements were handled by the Green Funeral Home in Danbury.

Evelyn N. Pretty

Newtown resident Evelyn N. Pretty, 73, died February 20 at the Bethel Health

Care Center. She was the wife of Arthur J. Pretty of 52 Pond Brook Road.

Mrs Pretty was born in East Burke, Vt., on December 12, 1924, a daughter of

Fred and Lillian Gilman Greene. She was raised in Ridgefield where she lived

until moving to Newtown in 1963.

She was a machine operator at the Barden Corp for more than 25 years.

Besides her husband, Mrs Pretty is survived by a son, James A. Pretty of

Deltonia, Fla.; two daughters, Carol A. Kent and Lorraine Wedge, both of New

Milford; a brother, William J. Greene of Brooksville, Fla.; seven

grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Newtown Ambulance Association,

PO Box 344, Newtown 06470.

Cremation took place at Mountain Grove Crematory, Bridgeport.

A memorial service will be conducted at the Ridgefield Congregational Church

at a date and time to be announced.

Joseph A. Mainiero

Joseph A. Mainiero, 90, the father of Lynne Carino of Sandy Hook, died

February 17 in Desert Hospital, Palm Springs, Calif.

Mr Mainiero was born in Castelfranco in Miscano, Italy, a son of the late

Vincent and Grace DelVecchio Mainiero. He was a Trumbull area resident for

over 40 years and the husband of the late Lucy L. D'Onofrio Mainiero.

Mr Mainiero was a US Army Air Corps Veteran of World War II and also worked as

a brick and stone mason.

He also is survived by his son, Robert J. Mainiero of Palm Springs; his

son-in-law, David Carino of Sandy Hook; three brothers, Mario of Fairfield,

Anthony of Massachusetts, and Vincent of Milford; two sisters, Eleanor Rovello

of Florida and Dolores Pellegrino of Bridgeport; two granddaughters, Jessica

and Erica Carino; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services took place on February 23 at the S. Spadaccino and Sons

Funeral Home, 499 Washington Avenue, Bridgeport, followed by a Mass of

Christian Burial at St Catherine of Siena Church. Interment in St Michael's

Cemetery. Family and friends may call on Sunday from 4 to 8 pm.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Desert Hospital of Palm Springs,

1150 North Indian Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262.

Frances W. Wardwell

Former Sandy Hook resident Frances Wing Wardwell, 91, died February 18 in

Mediplex of Southbury. She was the wife of George Wardwell of Southbury.

Mrs Wardwell was born in Norwalk. She lived in Trumbull and Sandy Hook before

moving to Southbury.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Alan D. Wardwell of

Oxford and Roger W. Wardwell of Guilford; a sister, Carol V. Wing of Westport;

two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

A graveside service was held on February 20 in the Nichols Village Cemetery in

Trumbull with the Rev Hal Vink, pastor of the Nichols United Methodist Church,

officiating.

Contributions in memory of Mrs Wardwell may be made to Nichols Improvement

Association or the Nichols United Methodist Church.

The Cyril F. Mullins Trumbull Funeral Home, 399 White Plains Road, is in

charge of arrangements.
