It keeps getting better and better, doesn’t it?

The Newtown High School girls’ track and field team ran its record to 8-0-1 with a pair of convincing wins over Lauralton Hall and Joel Barlow and a tough tie with Masuk during a South-West Conference quad meet Tuesday afternoon at Blue & Gold Stadium.

“The season has been off to a GREAT start,” said head coach Marsha Caine. “Much better than I had hoped for. Our big secret is our freshman class coming up with unexpected points. Sadie Ball and Lindsay Weber are both qualified in the 1600 for SWCs and Tara Gaston is in our 4x400 relay and has qualified in the high jump.”

Jacky Curran was a triple winner, capturing first in the high jump (4-8), long jump (14-51/4 ) and triple jump (30-101/2 ). Caitlin Weber (100 high hurdles, 17.8), Leah Herity (200 dash, 27.4) and Amanda Hadgraft (discus, 85-10) were the only other individual winners for the Lady Nighthawks. But the 4x100 (Herity, Quincey Blanchard, Allison Frobey and C. Weber) and the 4x400 (Kate Stickles, Tara Gaston, Sarah Macknight and Frobey) relay teams also earned wins.

“Our sophomore class has improved greatly from last year, too,” said coach Caine. “Jackie Curran has qualified in the high jump and triple jump, Leah Herity in the 100 and 200 dashes for both states and SWCs, Quincey Blanchard in the 200, and Kate Stickles in the 400.”

Frobey and Stickles had solid performances in the 400 meters, finishing second and third, and Weber came in a strong second in the 300 intermediate hurdles to help propel the ‘Hawks along. Gaston, meanwhile, was second in the long jump (13-103/4) and third in the triple jump (28-31/4) to contribute to the cause.

“As expected, our junior and senior classes are performing well,” said coach Caine. “Caitlin Weber, Alli Frobey, Sarah Macknight, Carolyn Brennan, Christine Manfredonia, Amanda Hadgraft and Kaitlyn Murphy have all qualified in individual events.”

The ‘Hawks will be in Stratford on Tuesday to take on Bethel, New Milford and Stratford. The regular season will conclude the following Tuesday, May 20, with a home meet against Immaculate, Weston and New Fairfield.

The South-West Conference championship meet will be held Wednesday, May 28, in Newtown.
