Adopt A Cat Or Kitten And Participate In Photo Contest Saturday

By Kendra Bobowick

“You’re invited,” announces a flyer touting an adoption day for “cats and kittens — all ages!” Animal Rescue Day is Saturday, May 22 at the Hawleyville Post Office where personnel, and members of the Woodbury Feline Welfare Society, the Northshore Animal League, and local groups including the Hawleyville Environmental Advocacy Team, HEAT, welcome residents to a feline adoption/pet photo contest day from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm at 23 Barnabus Road.

Visit with kittens waiting for adoption. Donations of pet food, toys, and funds are appreciated.

HEAT representative Ann Marie Mitchell explained that proponents recently talked about “plans to define Hawleyville as sustainable.” Part of the plan includes Hawleyville.biz, a site promoting upcoming events, which will soon see updates. A sustainable community promotes social, environmental, and economic impacts, she said.

The pet adoption day was “a perfect opportunity,” to promote a social aspect in Hawleyville. Along with Newtown High School’s animal concerns club, which has collaborated with Post Master Mark Favales, the HEAT and Hawleyville proponents will participate in the pet adoption promotion, she said.

In conjunction with a larger U.S. postal service “Stamps to the Rescue” program, Post Master Favales asks participants to bring photos of pets, not just cats, to enter his pet photo contest. “Anyone who wants to bring a pet photo,” is encouraged to enter their pet in a contest intended “just for fun,” he said. Prizes will be awarded.

Food and toy donations collected that day will benefit local animals and shelters, he said.
