NHS Announces

Summer Theatre Program

Newtown High School plans to continue its summer theatre program.

The program is being sponsored by Newtown Continuing Education. Department Director Elissa Gellis states that unlike the previous Summer Theatre Connections program, the newly formed Newtown Summer Theatre will be two-part and strictly performance oriented.

Producer Andrew Knapp further explains that with the success of the previous program for young children and with the response of audience and cast and staff to the recent high school production of Show Boat, that there is a strong desire to do similar type productions during the summer.

Plans are for two different shows; the first will be for children ages 9 to 14 and will rehearse at the high school Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 to 12:30. The program will run for four weeks starting July 5.

Everyone registered in the program will be in this production; auditions will be for placement only.

“Last summer’s production of Cinderella was a great success and this year is sure to be the same special experience in which accomplishment and pride will combine with lots of fun and a wonderful sense of camaraderie,” said Mr Knapp. “The final result – the staging of the show – will delight all the participants, parents, and all those that attend.”

Performances will be July 30 and 31.

Tuition for the four-week session is $450 per participant. Early registration is encouraged as enrollment will be limited. Additionally, a minimum enrollment is necessary.

The other part of the program would be for high school and college students, ages 14 to 24. Rehearsals will be held weekday evenings starting July 5 and culminate with performances the weekend of August 5 – the weekend of the Newtown Tercentennial celebration. Auditions will be held early in June.

Due to copyright restrictions, Newtown Summer Theatre is not yet able to announce what the shows will be but be assured, they will be well-known, popular, large-scale musicals.

George Vollano, who so successfully steered Show Boat into port, will direct both shows and many of the same staff of Show Boat will again be on deck.

For enrollment and further information, contact Mr Knapp at 426-3025 or BorzoiPub@earthlink.net.
