avv/gs set 10/23 #717082

NEW YORK CITY — ACA Galleries announces its first exhibition of works by Edmund Yaghjian, on view through December 8. This show is part of a traveling exhibition organized by the South Carolina State Museum.

At the age of 3 Yaghjian immigrated with his family from Harpoot, Armenia, to Providence, R.I. He moved to New York City in 1930 and attended the Art Students League where he became close friends with John Sloan and Stuart Davis.

In 1945 he became the first chair of the art department at the University of South Carolina. Throughout his career he painted his surroundings. His style continually shifted from realism to stylized abstraction to nonobjective work. This exhibition will include representative work from his long career.

His work is in many collections, including Columbia (S.C.) Museum of Ar; Gibbes Museum of Art, Charleston, S.C.; High Museum, Atlanta; The New York Public Library, New York City; and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.

ACA Galleries is the exclusive representative for the Edmund Yaghjian Estate. A full color catalog is available with essays by Sharon Campbell, Paul Matheny and Robin Waites.

The gallery is at 529 West 20th Street, fifth floor. For information, 212-206-8080  or www.acagalleries.com.
