Wm Baczek Fine Arts Presents Pastels By Mallory Lake Through Oct 9
(with 1 cut)
NORTHAMPTON, MASS. -- Wm Baczek Fine Arts in Northampton is hosting a solo
exhibition of pastel landscapes of Italy by artist Mallory Lake. The show will
exhibit through Saturday, October 9. There will be an opening reception with
the artist present on Saturday, September 18, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.
Lake's landscapes are created using hand-made pastels which she applies in
thick, rich layers onto paper that has been specially coated with vegetable
fiber. This gives the paper a rough sand-papery surface, which combined with
the extremely soft and dense pastels produces a velvet-like buttery surface.
Traveling to Italy every year or two, Lake chooses to make her journey either
in early spring or mid-Autumn, when the colors of the landscape are in a
transitional state.
Lake's Tuscany is rich greens and browns, misty and mysterious. She softens
the edges of villas and the twisting streets, blurring with the rich pastels
to create landscapes that are at once evocative and accurate. Anyone who has
been to the Italian countryside around Tuscany, Umbria and Emilia Romagna will
instantly recognize how persuasively Lake captures the essence of the region.
Lake exhibits her pastels nationwide and even though she has been a primary
member of Wm Baczek Fine Arts stable of artists for years, this show marks her
first solo exhibit at the gallery. Her work is included in many important
public and private art collections, including the Museum in Lincoln, Mass.,
the Boston Public Library and the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University.
