For information on federal, state and community resources available to seniors, call 270-4330 or 270-4315. Newtown’s Municipal Agent for the Elderly is Alisa Awalt. She can be reached at 270-4330.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 10 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door mini-bus service Monday through Friday. Monday from 1 to 3 pm the mini-bus will go to Sand Hill Plaza. Fridays, the bus will alternate going to Danbury Fair Mall and to Berkshire Shopping Plaza. Cost is 60 cents each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75 cents each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

News For Week of November 15-19

ANYONE INTERESTED IN A PIANO/KEYBOARD CLASS is invited to call the center, 270-4310. All levels are welcome.

WE HAVE A NEW MUNICIPAL AGENT FOR THE ELDERLY in town. Her name is Alisa Awalt, and she will be available every Wednesday at the center. Alisa can be reached by calling 270-4330.

THERE WILL BE A MEDICARE PRESENTATION at the senior center on Wednesday, December 1. Virginia Parsloe and Marilyn Place will present an informal, self-help guide to Medicare 2000. Bring your Medicare booklet, to be reviewed page by page. After the presentation, appointments can be made to answer questions and review individual situations.

OUR CHRISTMAS PARTY will be Wednesday, December 8, at The Fireside Inn, from 11 am to 3 pm. Line dancing and a gourmet buffet will be available. Cost is $19 per person, and reservations and payment are due by December 1. Tables will be in groups of eight. Call 270-4310 to sign up.

A TAP DANCING CLASS is being started by Pat Babbage, our exercise teacher. Call 270-4310 to sign up. Any hard-soled shoes are fine.

BOOK EXCHANGE: Put one in, take one out… Come browse our Book Exchange shelves and trade your good condition paperbacks or hardcovers.

BIBLE STUDY IS BACK, thanks to Pat Gauvain, who is filling in until Glenna Rees returns. The group meets each Monday at 1 pm at the center.

THE BEREAVEMENT GROUP meets each Monday at 3:30 pm. This is a group for the newly bereaved. It is completely private, and there is no charge. Call 270-4310 to sign up, or just come in for the meeting on Monday afternoon.

CHRISTMAS CRAFTS will be worked on each Friday at 10 am. Join us for a variety of projects. Crafts include trees, angels, Santa, etc. A small fee will be charged to cover the cost of materials, and a schedule will be posted which must be followed. Call 270-4310 to sign up.

MEDICARE AND INSURANCE HELP is available the first Monday of each month at 10 am. Call 270-4310 for an appointment.

TRIPS: Year 2000 trip information is available for London & Paris, Bermuda and Ireland. Day trip booklets will be available early next year.

The bus for The King & I, on November 17, leaves at 9:30 am.

Menu For Week Of November 15-19

Reservations must be made three days in advance.

Meals are subject to change.

Meals include milk and margarine.

Monday: Corned beef reuben (corned beef, Swiss cheese, Thousand Island dressing & sauerkraut on rye bread), pickle wedge, potato salad, peaches;

Tuesday: Beef stew, noodles, biscuit, pineapple tidbits;

Wednesday: Spinach fettuccine, glazed carrots, soft breadstick, grapefruit juice, chocolate brownie;

Thursday: Pot roast w/ gravy, mashed potatoes, peas, dinner roll, birthday cake & ice cream;

Friday: Manhattan clam chowder, unsalted crackers, fish florentine, broiled tomato, rice, Italian bread, fresh fruit.

Activities Schedule, November 15-19

Monday: AM Pinochle/Bridge, crafts, walking (meet at Dickinson Park pavilion), art class; PM yoga, Bible study group meeting;

Tuesday: AM Pinochle, exercise, keyboard class (Level I); PM needlecraft, bowling (at Brookfield Lanes);

Wednesday: AM line dancing, Pinochle; PM Bingo;

Thursday: AM exercise, Pinochle, PM crafts, bowling (at Brookfield Lanes);

Friday: AM Christmas crafts, sewing/quilting group, mah jongg; PM knitting.

 Remember, you must call three days in advance to book a meal or a ride, 270-4310; the Senior Bus, 748-2511.
