Newtown’s 13-year-old Babe Ruth Prep All Stars suffered an early exit from the state district tournament this past week. The locals dropped a 12-7 at Bethel Saturday afternoon then bowed out of the double elimination tourney with an 11-4 loss to Danbury on Sunday.

Newtown’s top hitters in the two games were Jake Rouse, Sean Reilly, Patrick McCarthy, Dave Marcucilli, John Morgan and Matt Selezan.

Against Danbury, Newtown trailed 5-0 before cutting the lead to one with four runs in the fifth inning. Selezan’s double and CJ Maurer’s single highlighted the rally.

“We were all charged up, but then they just started picking away at us,” noted assistant coach Chris Maurer. “The flood gates opened late in the game.”

McCarthy pitched well in defeat in both games.

“We didn’t play up to our potential, but we didn’t catch any breaks either,” Maurer said.

The locals are still alive in the Orange Tournament where it they have already won three games in the round robin tournament, defeating Brookfield, Aspetuck and Stratford. Newtown is slated to continue its run on Saturday.
