Hawks Set Records, Qualify For States
Two members of Newtown High Schoolâs boysâ and girlsâ indoor track teams either matched or broke school records and several others qualified for state championship competition at the South-West Conference Developmental Meet at Wesleyan University in Middletown on January 10.
Kevin Bonacci tied the school indoor high jump record of 5-8. The previous record was set by Rich Frankonis on December 30, 1988. Lauren Sudbey set a new indoor pole vault school record (9-6). Sudbey held the previous record of 9-feet which she set on January 19, 2008 and then tied two more times last winter.
The following are state qualifiers:
Boysâ 300 meters: Matt Genovese, 40.24
Boysâ high jump: Kevin Bonacci 5-8
Boysâ shot put: John Wlasuk, 42-3
Boysâ pole vault: Josh Milas, 10
Girlsâ 55 meter hurdles: Lauren Pettinelli 9.6
Girlsâ long jump: Lauren Sudbey, 15-1
Girlsâ pole vault: Lauren Sudbey 9-6; Emily Korth, 9
Girlsâ shot put: Rachel Taback 32-8.5
