Residents From Newtown Join In The Fight Against Cancer
BOSTON â This year, three residents from Newtown will be raising funds for cancer research by walking in the 15th annual Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk, presented by Hyundai Motor America, to be held on Sunday, September 21.
Newtown walkers Amy Cameron, Riley Cameron, and Betsy Post will join more than 8,000 participants who are expected to raise $5 million for cancer research and care for children and adults at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Over the past 14 years, walkers and their supporters have contributed more than $26.5 million to Dana-Farber. This funding supports cutting-edge cancer research to find cures and better treatments for all forms of the disease. It also provides special services and assists with costs of patient care and treatment.
Participants can register with a team or as an individual; each participant age 18 and older must raise a minimum of $200. Participants age 12 and younger must raise a minimum of $100. Pacesetters, those who raise $750 or more, receive special recognition from the Jimmy Fund, and are invited to a celebration at the start of the next Walk season. Participants are encouraged to form teams and walk in honor of those who have been affected by cancer.
âThe Walk gives people the opportunity to join a community of friends and families to support cancer research while honoring everyone who is or has been directly affected by the disease,â said Ed Wiederhold, director of the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk.
The Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk is the only event, other than the Boston Marathon itself, that is sanctioned by the Boston Athletic Association to use the historic 26.2-mile route from Hopkinton to Boston. Walkers can choose from two different routes: 26.2 miles from Hopkinton, 7 am; or 13.1 miles from Wellesley, 11 am. Patients and their families can follow the three-mile route that begins at the Harvard Medical School Quad, at 2 pm. All walkers finish at the Copley Square finish line.
