FOR 12-31

WORKS BY JESS AND BY ROBERT BECHTLE

set 12-21 #613914

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. — Gallery Paule Anglim is presenting an exhibition of works by Jess, 1923–2004, from January 5 to 29, and an exhibition of works by Robert Bechtle, February 3–March 5.

With representative works from the early 50s to 1970, the Jess exhibition pays home to the artist’s much respected contribution. His unique imagery, evolved from mythology and fables both playful and profound, has long been admired by critics, curators and writers. Using paper collage or his eccentric painting techniques, Jess’s pictures referenced and invented symbols.

Many works are accompanied by texts or incorporate words. Images and words were matched with a finesse that plays with expectations of narrative, as well as depth and color. Many pieces illustrate the creative climate of his working relationship with his companion, the poet Robert Duncan, and their now-famous circle of literary and artistic friends.

The opening reception will be conducted on Thursday evening, January 6, from 5:30 to 7:30.

The February exhibition will feature Bechtle’s unique representations of the Bay Area urban and suburban landscape. For more than 30 years, the artist’s singular preoccupation with effects of light, shadow, perspective and surface have yielded extraordinary images of ordinary streets, cars and houses. Bechtle’s images are painstakingly controlled with a quiet psychology.

A reception for the artist will take place Thursday, March 3, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

Gallery Paule Anglim is at 14 Geary Street. For information, 415-433-2710 or www.gallerypauleanglim.com.
