Each year, the industry magazine inducts companies that have set the standard for professionalism and integrity through smart marketing, exemplary business practices, unique design, and extraordinary impact in their community or the industry at large. Big50 remodelers run successful, often growing, companies of various sizes that have taken the lead in raising industry standards.

Remodeling Magazine editors, columnists, industry leaders, and the companies themselves make the nominations each year. Following a lengthy evaluation process — which includes interviewing people at the nominated companies, and often interviewing their competitors, suppliers, and subcontractors — editors select the remodelers who exemplify the very best of the industry that year, and who have something to offer other remodelers in proven practices.

“The award recognizes excellence and leadership, and we are privileged to be named to this select group of remodelers,” said David H. Adams, president, Design Builders & Remodeling, Inc.

After growing to a volume large enough to hire trades normally subcontracted, Mr Adams brought those trades in-house.

“I wanted to have more control over our job schedules rather than being a victim of delays due to subcontractors’ schedules,” said Mr Adams, who was originally trained as an architect. “I wanted my clients to rave about their experience of working with us, and when they didn’t, it was usually due to something that a subcontractor did or did not do.”

Design Builders & Remodeling now has separate divisions for excavation and concrete; plumbing and heating; drywall; and a high-end kitchen showroom called Bailey Avenue Kitchens in Ridgefield. The company also has full-time designers, tile setters, painters, roofers, masons, interior designers and carpenters.

“I’ve concentrated on getting things running smoothly and putting the right people in place. Things have never run better; my time has been freed up, and I can now pay more attention to long-term planning,” said Mr Adams, a self-professed organizational fanatic.
