‘BEACH’ LECTURE AT PHILLIPS OCT. 18

AVV 10-3 #714705

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Phillips Collection will present a lecture, “Viewing the Beach,” on Thursday, October 18, at 6:30 pm.

During the 1850s most painters viewed the French coast in terms of the force of the sea or as a place for solitary reflection. Dr John House, professor at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, and co-curator of “Impressionists by the Sea,” explores how Eugène Boudin, Claude Monet and Edouard Manet consciously moved toward creating a modern form of painting by representing fashionable vacationers and newly built resorts on the beach.

House discusses why Monet and Boudin later turned away from resort imagery to present the coast, once again, as a site for private introspection.

The Phillips Collection is at 1600 21st Street NW. For information, 202-387-2151 or www.phillipscollection.org.
