The Newtown High School wrestling team is coming off an impressive week in which the Nighthawks improved to 17-6 (8-2 in the South-West Conference).
They will aim to continue their winning ways in the SWC Tournament, scheduled for Friday and Saturday at New Fairfield.
The Nighthawks beat SWC rival Bunnell 45-30 on January 30. The Hawks won eight of 14 matches, six of which were by pin. With the score tied 6-6, the Hawks reeled off five consecutive victories before holding on for the win.
On Saturday, the Hawks won all four matches at Staples High School in Westport, beating Norwich Free Academy 48-33, Fairfield Prep 45-19, Guilford 40-29, and Holy Cross 51-24.
âThe key is to peak at the end of the season and it looks like we are with our better wrestlers pinning their opponents,â Newtown Coach Alan Potter said.
The Hawks were slated to conclude the regular season Wednesday against Bethel (the results of which were not available before The Bee sports section went to press).
