'Shield Of Dreams' At IAIS
âShield Of Dreamsâ At IAIS
WASHINGTON â Through August 6, The Institute for American Indian Studies is presenting a new temporary art exhibit titled âShield of Dreams,â featuring work by Pat Travis.
Ms Travis, of New York State, has exhibited widely in New York and has been featured in both juried group showings and in one-person showings. Her work can be described best as mixed media on large and colorful silk canvases portraying Southwestern textures filled with shields, canyons, horses, and obscure messages.
Each piece is a journey of expression, a cryptic message, joining cultural and spiritual knowledge that lies in the artistâs subconscious.
Ms Travis was drawn to the beauty of silk as a canvas, using resist dyes for paint because of their luminosity and color brilliance. Incorporating other media, her works grew into âtribal storiesâ evoking imagery of past histories.
Exhibit hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm; and Sunday, noon to 5 pm. Exhibit entrance is included in the regular IAIS admission fee of $4 for adults and $2 for children ages 6 to 16.
A public reception will be held on Saturday, June 3, from 2 to 4 pm, and the artist will conduct a gallery walk through the exhibition at 3 pm.
For additional information, call IAIS at 860/868-0518, extension 7. The museum is at 38 Curtis Road.
