Swimmers Fall To Brookfield But Record Season-Best Times
Newtown High Schoolâs boysâ swimming and diving team fell 102-82 to Brookfield at home on Tuesday. But while the Nighthawks may have lost the battle, they won several wars. Seven individual swimmers had their best times, and the swimmers in two relays also saw their best work of the young season.
NHS Coach Matt Childs said he was proud of the teamâs effort and their individual accomplishments. No matter what the outcome, the meet was fun for the local swimmers since many of the Brookfield and NHS competitors swim together on club teams.
âThis is the meet that we all look forward to because a lot of us know each other,â Newtownâs Matt Iassogna said.
The most exciting meet of the evening was also the first heat of the meet. Coming into the last leg of the 200 yard medley relay, Newtown trailed but Luke Fiore took off from the block and made up ground to help the team to first-place finish in 1:47.87.
The 200 yard freestyle relay was another strong race for Newtown. Chris Parker, Fiore, Kyle OâConnor and Abben Hung captured first place by one tenth of a second in a time of 1:36.15.
Fiore was Newtownâs only individual winner of the meet. In the 50 yard freestyle he finished in 23.63 which was slightly faster than Hung (23.76), whose time was a personal best. Tony Fragoso also accomplished a personal best in that race. Fiore and Hung provided Newtown with itâs only one-two finish. Fiore also captured the 100 yard freestyle (50.69).
In the 100 yard breaststroke, a problem with the timing system forced the judges to look at the scores from the timers on the pool deck. While one stopwatch had Brookfield capturing first, Hung appeared to have won. Officially, however, the race was awarded to Brookfield. Hung finished in 1:09.34. Also in that heat, Patrick Stein and Michael Hubbard tied for third place (1:10.34). The race was a personal record for Hubbard. Iassogna was strong in his second-place finish in the 100 yard butterfly (58.38). Maggie Korth placed second in diving.
