Kornhaas

Decorated Veteran Of World War II

Donald J. Kornhaas, 85, of Danbury, died peacefully, November 2, in Danbury. He was born February 26, 1925, in Danbury, a son of Anna (Keane) and Martin Kornhaas.

Mr Kornhaas is survived by five children, including Matthew Kornhaas and his wife, Dawne, of Newtown; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter, Lauren Kornhaas of Waterbury; six siblings; his former wife Joan M. Kornhaas of Florida; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Helen Kornhaas and Catherine Titus.

Mr Kornhaas served in the 5th Division during World War II. He was deployed to the South Pacific where he fought on Iwo Jima. Consequently, he was presented the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy. After the war, he returned to Danbury to become a union carpenter and went on to work as a self-employed building contractor until his retirement. Always active in the Catholic church, Mr Kornhaas donated his time and skills to a number of causes, including serving as president of the Legion of Mary.

He enjoyed traveling between Prince Edward Isle and Oklahoma, where he spent time with his close friends and family. He was happiest outdoors riding horses, fishing, or in the vegetable garden.

Funeral services will take place at St Peter’s Church, 104 Main Street, Danbury, Saturday, November 13, at 10:30 am. Burial with military honors to take place immediately afterwards in St Peter’s Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
