Laxmenâs Win Streak Hits Double Digits
Newtown High Schoolâs boysâ lacrosse team improved to 11-0 to begin the campaign, following a 9-5 victory over Joel Barlow of Redding on May 5 and a 19-0 blanking of Notre Dame-Fairfield on May 9. Both wins came at Blue and Gold Stadium.
The Nighthawks were striving to maintain their winning ways against Staples in Westport, in a clash with a tough FCIAC opponent on Wednesday (after The Bee sports section went to press).
In the win over Barlow, Justin Brophy had three goals, and Colby Summerlin found the net twice. Newtown trailed 3-2 after one quarter, but seized control of the game by outscoring the Falcons 4-0 in the second and 3-0 in the third. Brendan McNamara fielded eight, and Dan Sclafani scooped seven of Newtownâs 47 groundball pickups, and McNamara won 13 of the 17 faceoffs he took. Goaltender Brandon Body made eight saves.
Against Notre Dame, Newtown erupted for ten first-quarter tallies. The offense was led by Trey Trudellâs four-goal effort, and three-goal performances by Summerlin and Brophy. Dan Hebert compiled seven assists, and Lewis Thompson added five helpers. Cory Fisher scooped nine grounders, Matt Genovese had seven ground ball pickups, and Hebert had six of Newtownâs 57. Fisher and McNamara combined to win 21 of 24 draws.
