Orienteering, With Mountain Bikes As Another Challenge

REDDING — Western Connecticut Orienteering Club will host a Bike-O Meet on Sunday, October 22, at Huntington State Park, Sunset Hill Road. The event will be along the trails of the park, with participants orienteering on mountain bikes.

Three levels of bike courses will be available: short/beginner, medium/advanced, long/advanced. Foot courses will also be available. Registration and starts will run from 10 am to noon, and all are welcome. Instruction and compasses will be available.

Cost is $5 per person. Contact Rick or Susie DeWitt, 203/368-9380, for directions to Huntington Park.

Participants will be riding their bikes and use an orienteering map and compass to find their way across the terrain, seeking orange and white flags at various land features. The features are marked on the map and act as checkpoints along the course.

Participants decide on the trail route to the feature and punch a score card to confirm finding the flag.

In orienteering as a competition, the winner punches all the flags, in order, in the shortest time.
