Mr Curry, 52, of Farmington, is close to finishing a book that puts corruption in Connecticut in the context of the ethical breakdown on Wall Street in the 1990s.

“What was happening in Connecticut was emblematic of its time,” Mr Curry said in commenting on the controversy that prompted Mr Rowland to resign from office two weeks ago as a legislative committee was considering his impeachment.

Mr Rowland, who resigned last week, accepted gifts from workers and state contractors and he remains a target of a federal grand jury investigating contracts awards by his administration.

Mr Curry lost in a five-way race for governor in 1994 when he got 34 percent of the vote to Mr Rowland’s 36 percent. Mr Rowland won the 2002 race against Mr Curry with 56 percent of the vote.

Mr Curry said he was encouraged by the public response he received on July 4 while marching in an Independence Day parade in Willimantic.

“It was amazing. All these people shouting out apologies for voting against me. Everybody shouting out: ‘You were right.’ It was extraordinary,” Mr Curry said.
