Songs Inspire Quilt Exhibit

At Booth Library

An exhibition of contemporary art quilts by The Scrapbag Quilt Artists will be on display at C.H. Booth Library from September 11 through October 14.

Taking inspiration from music, members of the local group designed each quilt around a specific song. Using the title, a verse or imagery generated by the song, each quilt artist used myriad techniques and materials to create personals interpretation of the theme.

A number of pieces are based on “America The Beautiful,” with designs ranging from  contemporary to traditional. Each quilt is a unique expression of the artist’s vision, using fabric instead of paint, thread instead of canvas, and surface embellishment rather than a frame.

The exhibit, “A Song In My Heart,” is the fifth exhibit mounted by the group, which has been together since the early 1980s.

A quilt is comprised of two layers of fabric, with a layer of batting sewn between. This broad definition allows the artists a valid way to express their creative process through the use of soft textiles, rich colors and countless visual textures.

The quilt as an art form has evolved rapidly since the late 1970s; those expecting “Grandmother’s Flower Garden” or “Sunbonnet Sue” are in for a wonderful surprise.

The exhibit may be viewed during normal library hours: Monday through Thursday, 10 am to 8 pm; Friday, noon to 5 pm; Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm; and Sunday, 1 pm to 5 pm. The  library, at 25 Main Street, can be reached at 426-4533.
