Here is an interesting concept – why not have your kids cool off and learn how to swim at the same time?

The next two sessions in the Newtown Parks and Recreation Department’s series of swim lessons – held at Dickinson and Treadwell Parks – are ready to begin and there are openings in nearly all the levels.

Session 2 will run from July 18 to July 29 while the Session 3 will run from August 1 to August 12. In Session 2, the Level III lessons are filled while, in Session 3, the Level IV (9:30 to 10 am) section is filled.

All other Levels are still open.

An Infant level is designed for young swimmers six months to five years of age and focuses on building swim readiness by emphasizing fun in the water. Parents must accompany their children and will participate in several guided practice sessions.

Level I is an introduction to water skills; learn how to enter and exit the water safely, open eyes underwater, swim on front and back, float, submerge mouth, noses and eyes, and basic safety rules. Level II is about fundamental aquatic skills; learn how to enter the water by stepping or jumping off the side, exit water safely using the ladder, swim on side, tread water, submerge entire head and perform simple crawl.

Level III is all about stroke development; learn how to use rotary breathing and perform a survival float and more. Level IV is all about stroke improvement; learn how to perform a shallow dive, swim underwater, and water.

Level V concerns stroke refinement; learn further coordination of the basic strokes, perform a variety of dives, and the flip turn. Level VI is swimming skill proficiency as students learn to refine the strokes and swim with ease while preparing for more advanced courses.

In Session 2 the Level IV, V and VI swimmers will meet 9 to 9:30 am or 9:30 to 10 am at Treadwell Park. Level I and II swimmers will meet from 11:30 am to 12 noon at Dickinson Park. Infants will meet from 11:30 to 12 noon at Treadwell.

In Session 3 the Level III, IV, V and VI swimmers will meet from 9 to 9:30 am or 9:30 to 10 am (excluding Level IV) at Treadwell Park. Level I and II swimmers will meet from 11:30 am to 12 noon at Dickinson Park while Infant swimmers will meet from 11:30 am to 12 noon at Treadwell Park.

Lessons will be held Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Cost is $45 for infant swimmers and $65 for Level I to Level VI swimmers. Call the Parks and Recreation Department at 270-4340 for further information and registration.

Rowing

If you already know how to move about in the water, why not learn how to move on top of the water.

GMS Rowing Center in New Milford is hosting weekend workshops for anyone who would like to learn how to row.

Workshops will be held July 16-17, August 6-7, August 20-21 and September 10-11 from 10 am to 12 noon pm at the GMS Center at 143 West Street in New Milford.

The first day takes place on dry land and gives participants an introduction into the basics of the rowing stroke and the rowing shell. The second day will see participants hit the waters of Lake Lillinoah to put into motion the skills they have learned.

The workshops are open to anyone ages 13 and up. Cost is $70 per person, per session.

GMS will also be holding more in-depth rowing camps in two-week sessions running from Mondays through Thursdays.

Sessions will begin on July 25, August 8, August 22, September 6, and September 19 and will run from 10 to 11:30 am or 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

Call the Newtown Parks and Recreation Department at 270-4340 for further information.
