No New Taxes

To the Editor:

The Newtown Budget Vote: Please, “The Silent Majority” continues to vote No. Everyone I’ve talked to voted No because they do not want any new taxes, period. They did not say they wished the education cuts reinstated, they emphatically stated that taxes are too high.

In a Washington Post article released this afternoon, Tuesday June 12, 2012, Ylan Muy writes that the net worth of American families is down — way down.

The Federal Reserve said the median net worth of families plunged by 39 percent in just three years, from $126,400 to $77,300 in 2010. That puts Americans roughly on par with where they were in 1992.

The economy is in difficult times, our home values have fallen 30 percent; have we seen a reduction of our real estate taxes to more correctly reflect our fair tax burden? Our federal government, most states and municipalities have had to cut expenses because of the reduction in tax revenues due to many bankruptcies, job losses, and corporate earnings losses.

Our elderly are having a difficult time meeting the current taxes imposed on them, some are trying to sell their homes because they cannot afford to live here any longer, and they to are voting No new taxes.

Thank you for your courtesy,

Bill Cafarelli
