JPW BLUE

Newtown 6, Aspetuck 0

Justin DeVellis scored the lone touchdown late in the third quarter to lead the Newtown Junior Pee Wee Blues to a 6-0 win over Aspetuck.

With the score tied 0-0 in the third, the locals put together a 65-yard drive. Phillip Reynolds, Riley Wurtz and Justin DeVellis were able to gain most of that yardage on the ground behind blocks from Alec Woznick and Luke Moore. A bone crushing block by Mike Senf sprung Reynolds on a 20-yard scamper.

But when Newtown was faced with a fourth down on the Aspetuck 35, needing 12 to keep the drive alive, Wurtz took a shotgun snap from Kyle Morrissey and threw a pass to DeVellis on a fly pattern that DeVellis caught at the nine. From there, Newtown was able to punch it in three plays later. JP Kitzmiller provided the key block.

The Blue defense rose to the challenge all afternoon, stopping Aspetuck from ever getting close to the end zone. Defensive end Cooper Gold had a strong outing and was helped by Andrew Tarantino on the other side. Senf, Jack McManus, Christian Barrett, Chris Stanton, Wilder Carnes and Ryan Manion also played well on defense, holding the Aspetuck running backs to low yardage on the day.

The Newtown offense got things going early in the game, but their opening drive stalled deep in Aspetuck territory and Big Blue had to give up the ball on downs. Reynolds and Wurtz were able to gain big chucks of yardage on nifty reverse plays.

Leading the blocking on the afternoon were Andrew Tarantino (from his quarterback position), Morrissey, James Leidlein, Nick Pedalino and Kitzmiller.

Next week, Big Blue is back in action against Bethel in Bethel.

MIGHTY MITE BLUE

Newtown 32, Bethel 6

Julian Dunn scored on runs of 50, 40 and 35 yards and Colton Smith scored on a run of 55 yards as the Newtown Mighty Mite Blue remained undefeated at 3-0 with a 32-6 win over Bethel.

Jack Martin also scored on a 10-yard run, showcasing some nifty moves of his own. The balanced Newtown offensive attack finished its scoring with point after conversions to both Colin Reilly and Max Rucinski.

The offensive line of Matt Bouton, Stephen Grasso, Nick Samuelson, Nick Strokis, Eric Street, Jeremy Solaris and Colin Reilly dominated the Bethel defensive front and really allowed the running backs to take advantage of some huge holes.

The defense gave up its first touchdown of the season after a fumble on its own five yard line. Bethel punched it in from the five with only a minute left in the game. However, the defense dominated with the play of Grasso, Dunn, Jack Lago, Mike Doyle, Rucinski and Smith.

Grasso’s outstanding play at nose guard caused problems for the Bethel offense from the opening whistle and first year players Nick Barrows, Scott Gregson, Joe Santella, and Ryan Shaw all had nice tackles to close out the days events.

The Mighty Mites will take on Ridgefield Saturday at Hawley School.

MIGHTY MITE GOLD

Newtown 12, Monroe 0

A swarming defense – led by Chance McMahon, Brian Kiley, David Anderson and Devin Luzetti – allowed just three first downs all day as the Newtown Mighty Mite Gold blanked Monroe, 12-0, last weekend.

Nick Lotrecchiano scored both touchdowns on a 35-yard run and a 65-yard kickoff return. Bryce Mather, Bubba Condon, Trevor Lopez, Chase Wurtz and Logan Walsh also ran the ball and, with Lotrecchiano, combined for more than 150 yards rushing.

Walsh added a big run, scampering 63 yards before being caught at the two-yard line at the end of the game.
