Spotlight On Judi Dench: Film Series At YCBA
NEW HAVEN â The Yale Center for British Art is presenting an August film series, âSpotlight On Dame Judi Dench.â
Judith Olivia Dench was born in York, England, in 1934. She studied acting at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London and made her stage debut in 1957 as Ophelia in the Liverpool Old Vicâs production of Hamlet. Her roles have encompassed stage, screen, and television, but it wasnât until her role as Queen Victoria in Mrs Brown that she became an international film star.
She has been nominated for three Academy Awards (Mrs Brown in 1998, Chocolat in 2001, and Iris in 2002), and won an Academy Award in 1999 for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in Shakespeare in Love. In 1988 Dench became a Dame of the British Empire in honor of her contribution to the arts.
Screenings are planned for Saturday afternoons at 2, and continue this weekend with Mrs Brown (1997, directed by John Madden, PG, 103 minutes).
The series will continue as follows: August 18, Pride and Prejudice (2005, directed by Joe Wright, PG, 127 minutes); and August 25, Chocolat (2000, directed by Lasse Hallström, PG-13, 121 minutes).
