‘MICHAEL MAZUR: FROM NATURE’ AT MARY RYAN GALLERY OCT. 18

avv/gs set 10/8 #714992

NEW YORK CITY — “Michael Mazur: From Nature, Prints and Drawings, 1958 through 2007” are on view at Mary Ryan Gallery through November 24. An opening reception will be Saturday, October 20, 4 to 6 pm.

Mary Ryan Gallery presents a retrospective of some 30 prints and drawings by Michael Mazur. Whether representational or abstract, Mazur’s art has always been rooted in nature. Although this is his 12th solo exhibition at Mary Ryan Gallery, it is the first to focus exclusively on prints and drawings. This exhibition, drawn from 50 years of work, traces the evolution of Mazur’s art and examines the dialogue between early representational work and his recent abstractions.

Diverse, experimental and passionate in his approaches to printmaking, Mazur works in etching, woodcut, lithography and silkscreen, often combining a variety of techniques and printing on multiple panels or on such unconventional materials as silk.

He is also credited with playing a significant role in reviving the monotype, a combination of painting and printmaking that yields a single impression. His tendency to work in series addresses his interest in the passage of time and memory, and allows him to explore darkness and light within the same imagery.

The “Lily Growths” etchings from 1958 are the earliest works in this exhibition. Each print provides a different fragmented view of the intricate verdure growing at the water’s edge. Even in these early etchings one can see the cascading forms and tangled vegetation that are characteristic of Mazur’s later abstractions.

These etchings related specifically to the recent “Pond Edge” prints series (1997–present), a complex series of abstract prints that combine a variety of print media.

The gallery is at 527 West 26th Street. For information, www.maryryangallery.com or 212-397-0669.
