ESSEX, MASS. â Blackwood/March Auctioneers has scheduled an estates fine art and antiques auction to be held at Woodmanâs Essex Room, 121 Main Street at 6 pm on January 2, with a preview the day of the sale from 4 to 5:55 pm. With an emphasis on paintings and prints from the Cape Ann School, 200 artworks will be offered in the sale.
Notable works include an early W. Lester Stevens oil harbor scene with schooner ($8/15,000), early Emile A. Gruppe harbor oil ($6/10,000), five oil paintings by Gruppeâs son Robert Gruppe, including Florida scenes, a Carl W. Peters harbor scene consigned from the estate of the artist ($4/6,000), an estate collection of 30 Gifford Beal etchings and works by Otis Cook, Walter Dean, Charles Movalli, G.T. Margeson and Wayne Morrell.
New England artists represented included an early Mohegan Island oil on board by Frederick Waugh ($2/4,000), a rare view of Provincetown by A.C. Groll, an Abbot Fuller Graves oil of a Kennebunk cottage scene and an Impressionistic landscape with birches by Cecil Chichester.
Further afield, two Ninth Century Chinese paintings on silk will go on the block â a Zhou Quan, also known as Zhou Maquiao, landscape with figures and an early depiction of a celebration of the Mother of the Westâs birthday â a Japanese woodcut in colors by Kiyoshi Saito, an interior scene by French painter Alexandre Vion and a Russian courtyard scene by S. Kolsenicoff.
An estate antique marine collection leads the accessories in the January sale. Significant items include 20 antique builderâs half hulls â whaleboats and plank on frame models â N.L. Stebbensâ marine photographs, Nineteenth Century carved whalebone ship blocks and canes, sea chest beckets in old paint, cased sextant and compasses.
Furniture includes a set of six step down Windsor chairs in old paint, a two-drawer blanket chest and a French-style marble top ormolu mounted cabinet.
