âGolden Afternoonâ Of Music Planned
SOUTHBURY â A Sunday afternoon concert featuring soprano Tobé Malawista and The Guastavino Trio will begin at 4 pm on Sunday, August 10, at Sacred Heart Church. Preceding the concert, a wine and cheese reception will begin at 3 pm.
This event, titled âAll in the Golden Afternoon: Musical Word Paintings from Europe and the Americas,â has been designed for an audience of wide musical interests, including classical.
The Guastavino Trio features Jane Shelly, flute; Tom Hudson, cello; and Sara Kohane, piano.
Tobé Malawista, a graduate of Harvard University, received much of her training and inspiration for research in song repertoire from the late Irene Aïtoff, a renowned French singing coach. Mme Aïtoff encouraged Ms Malawista to delve into the repertoire of other countries to seek out forgotten or neglected treasures.
The August 10 program will feature a new work written for the trio and Ms Malawista on a text of Edward Lear by the young American composer Richard Pearson Thomas.
Tickets â purchased in advance, or at the door if the concert is not sold out â are $25 per person with the reception, and $15 per person for the concert only. They will be available at Villarinaâs Pasta & More, 22 Poverty Road in Southbury, or by calling Dorne Dietsch at 262-1698 or Catherine Hughes at 203-758-5421.
Ms Malawista has promised to donate 100 percent of the ticket proceeds to The Haitian Ministries in Norwich. The ministries programs, which is supported in part by the Haiti Committee of Sacred Heart Church, are nondenominational; they help those most in need.
Also, Haitian Ministries has administrative charges of about 12 percent, meaning 88 percent of the money goes directly to those in need. It does not go through the government.
Sacred Heart Church is at 910 Main Street South. Take Exit 14 off I-84 East or West.
