Week Ahead
Residents have their pick of free concerts during the upcoming week, from music of the 1950s on guitar to myriad styles led by a cellist, and even a full performance of Dixieland music.
On Friday, August 8, The Homesteads Assisted Living Community will offer its next Summer Concerts in the Courtyard event. Guitarist Susan Judge will perform music from the era of poodle skirts and beyond beginning at 7 pm. The Homesteads is at 166 Mt Pleasant Road; call 426-8118 for details. Light refreshments will accompany the performance.
Also on Friday, the award-winning cellist Thirzah Bendokas will headline âEnchanted Dream: Thirzah Bendokas in Concertâ at Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West Street. Admission to Ms Bendokasâ event is by donation, with all proceeds to benefit fellow musical colleague Bob Veillette. (See full details on page B-12.)
On Saturday, August 9, another visit to the era of poodle skirts will be offered when local DJs Seth Carley and Mark Edwards provide the music for the annual âGoing Back in Timeâ antique car show at Ashlar of Newtown, 139 Toddy Hill Road. Admission to this event, which will run from 11 am until 2 pm, is free. Contact Peggy Loulis at 364-3177 or 268-1111, for details.
Ashlar will also host the final free musical event of the week when it welcomes The Galvanized Jazz Band, another public event, on Wednesday, August 13. The 7 pm concert will be the finale for this seasonâs Summer Sounds Concert Series. The performance of Dixieland music will be an outdoor offering if weather permits, or indoors if necessary; call 426-5847.
