Among Friends at MoMA

NEW YORK CITY — The Museum of Modern Art will present “Among Friends,” Tuesday, May 3, at 7 pm, at the museum, 11 West 53rd Street, at the Roy and Viuta Titus Theater 2.

This is the inaugural event in a series of conversations with artists, presented by MoMA’s “Friends of Education.” It will feature artist Carrie Mae Weems, author Deborah Willis and Peter Galassi, chief curator, department of photography, MoMA.

Ms Weems is an internationally acclaimed artist and a self-described “image maker” whose principal medium is photography. Over her 20-year career, she has produced an array of narrative tableaux, documentary series and installation works. Major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art have exhibited and are collectors of Ms Weems’ photographs.

Ms Willis is professor of photography and imaging in the Tisch School of the Arts and of Africana Studies at New York University. Former curator of exhibitions at the Smithsonian Institution’s Center for African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., and curator of photography and prints at the New York Public Library’s Schomburg Center for research in Black Culture, Ms Willis has authored numerous books, organized exhibitions and lectured extensively on African American photography.

Mr Galassi was named chief curator of the department of photography at MoMA in 1991. Collaborating with other members he organized the recent reinstallation of MoMA’s photography galleries, and has presented more than 30 exhibitions at MoMA. He has authored and coauthored numerous publications and lectured extensively at universities and museums in Europe and the United States.

SURFACE AND FAMILY VACATIONS AT LAURENCE MILLER

NEW YORK CITY — The exhibition “Surface,” will be on view May 5–June 30 at Laurence Miller Gallery. Work by William Eggleston, Walker Evans, Harry Callahan, Lee Friedlander, Helen Levitt, Toshio Shibata, Aaron Siskind, Stephane Couturier, Jerry Uelsmann and Lalla Essaydi, along with NASA/US Geological Survey photographs of the moon, will comprise this group show.

Also on view will be “Mark Mann: Four Easy Pieces,” featuring four large-scale color photographs by Mr Mann. The America of family vacations is the topic, but here four vignettes encapsulate a day in the life of a seriously vacationing American family.
